Is There a Recall On The CP4 Pump? (2019 RAM CP4 Recall)

It is a mess. Whoever thought to green-light the CP4 pump certainly made a mistake and created a legal mess for different automakers and Bosch. Of course, not covering warranty secure repairs was another mistake made by those automakers.

Yes, there is and Dodge is late to the party. The recall for Ford and GM seems to have started back in 2018 and possibly in 2017. Dodge owners just started getting their recall notices in January of this year. There is a long list of vehicles affected by this failed part

To learn more about this recall just continue to read our article. It researches this issue and provides the best information possible so you know if your vehicle is on the many lists for repair. At least 6 lawsuits were filed back in 2018.

Is There a Recall On The CP4 Pump?

Is-There-a-Recall-On-The-CP4-Pump

Yes, there is and it is not sure when the recall started. Most recent articles only focus on the current Dodge recall notice which began on the first of this year. Some of the vehicles have had this part for 11 years.

The oldest affected were the 2010 Chevy Express, Savana, and Sierra vans and trucks all of which had the Duramax LGH engine. The next oldest was specific 2011 Ford, GMC, & Chevy vehicles.

Dodge did not have a problem until 2014. Lawsuits did not start until about 2018 and one seems to have been filed in 2020. The complaints say that Ford would blame the failure on inferior fuels used by the owners and refused to fix the pumps.

Bosch is also a target of the lawsuits as they are the company that originally made the CP4 pumps. There has been no word on the results of these different cases or if the recalls were successful or not.

What Mileage do CP4 Pumps Fail?

It seems that on average, the failure mark is 100,000 miles. This would explain why many 2010 and 2011 vehicles did not report any problems for many years. Some have failed at 25,000 miles and up.

Some owners do not drive their diesel vehicles on a daily basis. They do not rack up the miles as quickly as other drivers have. What has saved Dodge from a lot of problems is that they did not incorporate this pump in their motors until 2019.

It took them only 2 years to see the problem and the company went back to the CP3 in 2021. Other automakers were not as on the ball as Dodge was for this particular part.

However, during those 2 years, the company sold over 200,000 vehicles with the CP4 and their massive recall just started. When these pumps failed, they have caused up to $15,000 in damage to the whole system.

Some owners cannot afford that expenditure and were frustrated their brands did not back their warranties.

What Happens When a CP4 Fails?

Wha-tHappens-When-a-CP4-Fails

The results of this failure are quite extensive. The reason for the failure was that the CP-4 was originally made for European diesel fuel which is different and dirtier than American diesel fuel.

The ultra-low sulfur fuel did not lubricate the system well enough resulting in a chain of events that caused between $8,000 and $20,000 worth of engine damage.

When the lubrication is low, the metal-on-metal friction gets worse. This scenario means that metal was shaved and those shavings started to travel through the fuel system.

Because some of the engines this pump was installed in a closed loop system, those metal shavings were able to travel freely throughout the system as it bypassed any filters.

Those shavings were able to damage the pump, regulators, and injectors, which in turn stopped the vehicle from working until the expensive repairs could be done.

If you didn’t change back to the CP3 then you should put in an additive to help lubricate all the metal parts better.

RAM CP4 Fuel Pump Recall

It was Dodge’s or Ram’s new parent company that issued the recall. That company is called Stellantis and it seems to want to make its customers happy. The notices first started going out in January of this year to over 220,000 Dodge owners.

The vehicles that are affected by this recall are:

- 2019 to 2020 Ram 2500 (DJ) – 113,720 units built between October 11th, 2018 to November 13th, 2020.

- 2019 to 2020 Ram 3500 (D2) – 67,586 units built between October 18th, 2018 to November 13th, 2020.

- 2019 to 2020 Ram 3500 Chassis Cab (DD) – 11,384 units built between November 29th, 2018 to November 13th, 2020.

- 2019 to 2020 Ram 4500/5500 Chassis Cab (DP) – 29,720 units built between November 29th, 2018 to November 13th, 2020.

The recall seems to be only for those vehicles with the CP4.2 pump and not the CP4.1 model. Some people simply say the CP4 unit so that could refer to both model designs. Either way, you should check with Dodge to see if your vehicle qualifies for the repair service.

One of the problems in this issue is that some engines can be retrofitted to receive the CP3 pump while others cannot.

What is Ram Doing About The CP4 Recall?

According to our research, the Fiat Chrysler Automobile Group (FCA) is doing a voluntary recall. Well as you have read, that is already ongoing and you should look at the list of vehicles mentioned above to see if yours is on that list.

The company will “replace the HPFP, update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software, and inspect and, if necessary, replace additional fuel system components free of charge.” ( https://moparinsiders.com/recall-ram-recalls-222410-cummins-powered-trucks-for-cp4-fuel-pump/ )

You will need to contact the company to see further details and all the criteria that have to be met for you to be part of this extensive repair. Contact your local dealers and see what they can tell you about this recall.

You should have received the notice by now as they were sent out quickly in January. We have not heard if Nissan is affected by this problem or not. They were only mentioned as receiving a CP4 in their Nissan Titan 5.0L Cummins.

If your CP4 has not failed yet, contact that company to see if there are any plans to replace that pump model or not.

CP4 Recall Update

We have not seen many updates to date yet. Most articles simply address the Dodge recall and the best information we have is that the following list of vehicles is added to the one we already published above:

- 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines

Chrysler did open an investigation in February of this year but the results of that investigation have not been made public as of yet. While the debris floating through the system can cause extensive damage, FCA has not received any reports of crashes or injuries as a result of this part’s failure.

If you have any questions as a Chrysler owner, then you need to call the following phone number 800-853-1403 and ask about fuel pump recall number Z46.

Another letter was supposed to have been sent out in July of this year as well. The process is to go to your dealer and they will replace the part as well as other fuel system components.

CP4 Recall Reimbursement

CP4-Recall-Reimbursement

If you have already fixed this part, there is a possibility of reimbursement for your expenditures. Stellantis has been issuing reimbursements starting from about January to February this year and it should still be ongoing.

Make sure to have the original repair receipt and other documents to be eligible for this reimbursement. According to the company, all reimbursements are going to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Chrysler has also said-- “In order to be considered for recall or extended warranty reimbursement, repairs must be similar and/or related to the information contained in the recall or extended warranty notice you have received.”

Make sure your documentation is in order and that your repairs meet these general requirements. What Ford and GM or Chevy are doing is not known at this time.

The many news reports, etc., do not address what5 action they are taking except to say they are passing the blame back to the customers for the CP4 failure.

Some Final Words

If your vehicle has the CP4 pump built into your engine, then you need to take action as quickly as possible. Not just for the recall or lawsuits but to protect your engine if it has not failed yet.

Add some extra lubricant to help protect against metal shaving and see your dealer as soon as possible. The only issue will be is if your particular engine cannot be retrofitted to accept the CP3 model pump.

Call your dealers today and see what can be done for you.
