Often in the RV world, you will find brand-name companies that will not sell to the public. It is just a matter of licensing and preference that keeps them from direct sales. But there are other sources for the parts you need. It just takes a little more time to find them
Cummins is one of the few major companies that seem to sell directly to the public. They have a parts catalog as well as a buy parts online web page. Sometimes it pays to go to the source as you get the best parts that work for your Cummins Onan generator.
To learn more about where you can buy parts for this generator model, just continue to read our article. It explores the issue so you have the best information to get your replacement parts. Take a few minutes to see how this information saves you time, etc.
The best place to start would be with Cummins. The company has a web page dedicated to Onan parts and you can explore that page as well as the rest of their parts web pages starting with this link.
The company has developed several web pages concerning parts and service as well as providing a dealer locator web page to find those parts near you. Their dealer locator page works very well.
Other places to find replacement parts would be at the many local RV parts outlets. One of these is called the rvpartsgalaxy.com and they should have the parts you would need.
Another outlet would be norwall.com, while the company sells generators, they do have a parts section on their website. Rvpartscountry.com would be another place to check as they seem to have a large supply of all parts related to RVs and trailers.
A good local search on the Internet should turn up a lot more options for you to check out. Do not forget to check hardware stores and similar shops in case the other options do not work out.
As a last-ditch effort, you can try looking in the classified ads or the junk yards for the parts you need. They will be of some help at some point in time. The trick is to regularly check these options so you do not miss out.
You can check Amazon as that marketplace lists some mufflers for different generators. Make sure you have the model number handy so you can find the right one if it is available on that website. We see only a couple so far listed for sale but they may not be for the LP generator.
If you do not know the model number, you may be able to find it on this 56-page catalog put out by Cummins. The catalog has popped up on several search result pages.
Other places to look for this muffler would be Camping World and the rvupgradestore.com Or you can check directly with Cummins. They seem to have this part available as well.
The biggest issue will be price so make sure to check all possible sources unless you are in a situation where time is a luxury and you need to find one right away.
Or if you cannot find any location near you, try talking to the many RV owners on the discussion forums for your brand and model. What we have found over the years is that RV owners are almost always ready and willing to help their fellow RV owners.
They will know of some tips and tricks in case you cannot find what you are looking for.
Cummins store website has this warning on one of its spark plug pages:
“The use of Green Label, resistive, original equipment spark plugs will keep your Cummins Onan genset working properly. Use of other non-resistive plugs can cause generator shut downs without fault codes.”
The trouble is that the manual for this generator does not identify the model or type of spark plug you need. If you go to the Cummins store, you will see that the price for the right spark plug is over $5.
You do not have to pay that amount of money as the gas and LP generators are said to use the same spark plugs. You can go to any auto parts store etc., and find a cheaper model if you want.
The model number is reported as being- Onan # 167-1652 and the generator engine is said to be made by Subaru/Robin. Champion was a good brand to use and was effective in its operation for many years.
As can be expected, Onan, or Cummins, wants you to use their brand of oil for their generators. The company has put out what is called OnaMax oil in 10W-30 and 15W-40 viscosity and they cost $14.61 and 10.46 per quart respectively.
You may be able to find just as good oil in other brands. Changing the oil can be a bit of a pain as the oil fill spout is in a very awkward location. Or the motorhome’s design makes the location very impractical to reach
You may need a pump or along necked funnel to fill the oil tank successfully. It all depends on how the generator is mounted to your RV.
Cummins seems to make finding replacement parts for their Onan Generators a little bit easier. Not only do they have a dealer locator web page, but they also have online stores and a catalog to facilitate sales.
It will just take a little time to explore their website and find all the information you want. If you have lost a manual or misplaced it, there is a manual web page on their website as well. Cummins seems to have your needs covered when need it.
