When in doubt, always go to the source of the engine to get the exact figures you need. Some websites seem to list a larger amount of oil is needed for this engine than is necessary so be careful. You do not want to overfill the oil pan as that may cause some blow-by and create a mess under the hood.
The amount of oil you will need to put inside this motor ranges between 44 and 48 quarts. The difference depends on the size of the oil pan. Then, this engine needs its oil filter pre-filled before putting the new one on.
To learn more about this engine and how much oil it needs, just continue to read our article. It has the information you want to know about in case you lost or misplaced your owner’s manual or fact sheet. 48 quarts translates into 12 gallons of oil.
The instructions are for you to have an oil pan with about a 50-quart capacity. You will need to fill the engine up with about 48 quarts of oil and then prefill the oil filter which should add a little bit more to your capacity.
The amount of oil you put in will depend on the size of the oil pan. If your version of this engine came with a 46-quart capacity then you would only need to put in 44 quarts or 11 gallons of oil.
It is best to read your owner’s manual to make sure you know the size of your oil pan. Or call the dealer and give them the specific information on your engine and where it was installed (RV model) to get accurate information.
Or talk to a diesel engine mechanic to get all the details you need. That is if you have lost your owner’s manual. Another good source will be the discussion forum for your brand of RV. There are other owners who also have this information.
Plus, you can print or save this article as it has the correct information for you already.
The ISX15 was first designed in 1998 under the label N14 but as government emission regulations grew, the motor evolved into the ISX15. The IS stands for interact system and the ISX15 version came into existence in 2002.
This duel fuel engine, which runs on diesel or natural gas, may come with a very large oil pan. The specs on one website have the oil capacity listed at 14 gallons or 56 quarts.
That may be so for many RV owners. However, since there are different sized oil p[ans, do not take that as gospel truth for your RV or diesel truck. Your oil pan may be a bit smaller and only need the amount of oil mentioned above.
We suggest you double-check your owner's manual to make sure you know the exact amount of oil you should put in your engine.
There are at least 3 good oil brands to use. The recommended oil viscosity is the same for all three brands and that is 15 W 40. Here are the three recommended brands:
1. Shell Rotella T4 Triple Protection
2. Mobil 15W-40 Delvac 1300 Super
3. Delo 400 Conventional Diesel
The brand of oil is not the most important aspect of the type of oil you need. What is important is the viscosity and that the oil is made for diesel engines. These brands may cost more than your budget allows but do not worry you do not have to use them.
Stick with the important aspects and your engine should not suffer. The other key aspect is that this viscosity is good for those regions and seasons that do not go below 5 degrees F.
2004 saw a change in Cummins authorized oil intervals. For heavy-duty service, it used to be 15,000 miles then change the oil. Now it is at 20,000 miles.
For normal service, the interval went from 25,000 to 35,000 miles. Then for light duty service, the interval changed from 35,000 to 45,000 miles. These figures were for the Valvoline Premium Blue brand of oil.
In 2017, it seems that the interval was changed once again to 60,000 miles. Read your owner's manual to see what it says and follow it. Here are the instructions to do an oil change:
- Park the truck in a safe and level spot
- Warm engine to operating temp
- Remove engine oil fill cap
- Check engine oil level on dipstick to verify no prior issues (if it is found to be low make sure to check engine oil between services. If it is too high check for oil dilution or discoloration from contaminants)
- Remove the engine oil drain plug by inserting the 1/2″ drive into the drain plug and loosening
- Remove the engine oil filter using the filter wrench
- Clean the oil drain plug and oil filter mounting surfaces
- Prefill the engine oil filter with some the fresh engine oil
- Reinstall and tighten the oil drain plug (44 ft-lbs if a torque wrench is available)
- Fill the engine with 44 quarts of engine oil with the oil fill funnel and reinstall the oil fill cap
- Start the engine to let the oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut the engine back down
- Check engine oil level & top off if necessary

No matter what, always double-check the information you find on the internet with the company that made the engine. They will know best and will make sure you get the right information.
To keep your ISX15 engine in top shape, make sure to use the right oil, keep the engine filled to capacity and not more, and do regular oil changes when called for.
